Nick Kemp – an NLP Practitioner, Hypnotherapist and Provocative Therapist
When people think of the term "therapist", "Hypnotherapist", "NLP practitioner" and
"Provocative Therapy" these terms can often conjure up all manner of associations.
I am personally less interested in the academic study , scientific verification, labelling
and analysis of any approach, than in the effectiveness of what works best with private clients.
The founders of NLP
The creators of NLP of course were similarly interested in "effectiveness" of the best therapeutic
approaches and concerned with the "how and what questions" rather than "the why questions" In other
words both Richard Bandler and John Grinder sought to determine what each client was doing to create
"the problem" rather than "why" they had the problem.
Both co-creators of NLP originally studied Gestalt Therapy, Ericksonian Hypnosis, Provocative Therapy
and other successful therapeutic approaches. All these forms of personal change are far more
common place these days than in the 1970s and lots of therapists, life coaches, NLP Practitioners,
NLP Master Practitioners and NLP Trainers will use aspects of these different ways of working
in their practice.
Some people when first exploring Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP, may be interested in focussing
on specific NLP techniques. These include working with timelines, which has been also referred to
as "Timeline Therapy" and it can be quite daunting getting past all the jargon terms as some people
get confused by the apparently endless terms including TFT, EFT, DHE, NHR among others.
Finding the Best Therapist
My view is that BEFORE deciding to invest any time or money in seeing a therapist or NLP
Practitioner, first explore what they have to offer. Look at their website and explore how
long they have been working in this sphere, what training they have had and especially their
own philosophy for change work.
The proof of the effectiveness of any approach is in the results with the clients. My opinion
is that the best practitioners create their own approaches using what resonates with them
the most. Frank Farrelly originally studied Client Centred Therapy or CCT with Carl Rodgers
before then creating his own Provocative Therapy.
Nick Kemp the Therapist
I have been fortunate enough to study with Richard Bandler since the 1990s and then from
2004 onwards spend considerable time with Frank Farrelly, these and other influencses have
led me to create my own "Provocative Change Works"
approach. I use this approach in my Leeds private practice.
I called my own approach to change work by this new name as it is not
classic NLP, Hypnosis or even Provocative Therapy, but draws inspiration from all these
approaches. In Sept 2008 I am giving a number of presentations at the Institute for Advanced
Studies of Health or IASH conference in San Francisco detailing the differences between NLP,
Provocative Therapy, Ericksonian Hypnosis and Provocative Therapy. Read the many different
articles on this website and then get in touch to find out even more
about working with Nick Kemp
The internet is of course full of claims for
miracle cures using NLP, Hypnotherapy, counselling,
CBT and Hypnosis, but ultimately the individual practitioner’s own manner, approach and rapport
building are some of the key elements in producing great outcomes for clients.
