Nick Kemp - a Provocative Change Works™ Approach to Behavioural Therapy
My approach to therapy is to tackle the unwanted thinking and behaviour head-on, rather than to spend hours going over the past looking for some 'hidden meaning'/'original cause'. This approach using Provocative Change Works and Behavioural Therapy treats each client as a unique individual to produce a greater sense of well being.
Some of the most common conditions I treat are:
- Phobias
- Blushing
- Food and eating disorders
- Anger issues
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Binging
- Addictions
Although the above conditions may appear entirely different on the surface, there are common patterns that emerge in each instance. By changing the patterns and the emotional responses that create these patterns, many clients finally discover greater freedoms and choices in life.
All phobias are an abnormal response to a place or thing. It has been said by many that the only natural fears are sudden loud noises and fear of falling, so all phobias are 'learned behaviours'. A person could have created the phobia in a number of different ways and of course how they created it is not the central issue. What's important is how they break out of the phobic cycle so they have a more appropriate response for their own sense of well being. The most common phobia is the fear of public speaking, which is often resolved in a single session. Behavioural therapy focuses on changing the behaviours of clients so they are provoked into new ways of thinking and feeling.
During my BBC appearances I found that all phobias can be treated in very short periods of time regardless of how long the person had the condition. One bird phobic of 50 years standing was successfully treated and tested in just under 20 minutes.
Other common issues like Blushing, binging, eating disorders, jealousy, anxiety, panic attacks and anger management can be resolved by creating better 'state control' in the client. In many of these situations the client finds themselves caught in 'an emotional loop' where they keep exhibiting the same behavioural pattern over and over again regardless of how much they analyse or think about 'the problem'. By using behavioural therapy and other tools we can change the emotional response that triggers the problem and recode the old behaviour to create greater freedom of choice for the client in a manner that is verifiable and testable, so they know useful change has occurred.
Eating disorders, anger management issues and addictions can successfully be treated in the same way. Many clients who come with these issues have already attempted solutions using traditional more analytical approaches without success. The client has already thought almost everything there is to think about the condition and sometimes spent hours, days, months and even years talking about it, without changing the actual behaviour! All labels for conditions are also generalisations and some clients can fall into the trap of researching what they consider to be 'the problem' and then self diagnose so that they now refer to themselves as a depressive or anorexic or phobic discovering more and more examples of why they belong to this particular behavioural group, thus reinforcing the unhelpful condition. Behavioural therapy and Provocative Change Works focus directly on changing these old patterns of thinking and most clients experience a welcome relief from the problem in just 2 - 3 sessions.
