Nick Kemp - Better Relaxation
I first developed an interest in relaxation
in the late 1970s and since then have developed a number of different approaches and exercises that
have proved to be really effective in generating useful states of relaxation. Many problems that
people experience in life are compounded by an inability to relax in specific times and situations.
I talked about this on national TV in India earlier this year and how in this information age of social networking and 24 hour news, individuals are literally bombarded with sensory information which does not in many cases help produce useful relaxed states. Relaxation like any feeling state can only be discovered by thinking in a particular way. Nobody is able to just "get a feeling", there has to a thinking process first, that then creates any kind of feeling. I have often commented in trainings that a person can only be in one state at any one time making the following observation:
"You can be either in California or Texas; you can't be in both at the same time. You may be moving between states, BUT you can't be in both. In order to move from one state to another you have to ,in 99% of instances, get to the feeling after a process of thinking in a particular manner. You can't just "get a feeling!"
I further make the point:
"For example, I want you to feel totally relaxed, BUT you are not allowed to do any of the following: look at anything; imagine anything; listen to anything; think or say anything to yourself, then it’s not possible to experience this state of relaxation."
I teach students that there is a process that occurs for any feeling and any behaviour.
THINKING PROCESS then FEELING STATE then BEHAVIOUR/EXPERIENCE
By training ourselves to think differently, we are able to discover better states of relaxation and well being. The Provocative Change Works approach includes a series of exercises that assist in creating deep states of relaxation. When people access these states it gives them the potential to experience a different set of feelings, which gives the opportunity to explore new behaviours and possibilities.
In 1990 I began creating a series of audio products to assist with relaxation. These can be found on all Amazon international websites as well as in the online store on this site and included in this collection are two free mp3s both designed for producing deeper states of relaxation which are “This Healing Space” (Pivot Grammar for relaxation and “Well Being Now” Relaxation is a key tool in assisting with many client issues such as anger management, blushing, jealousy, public speaking anxiety and other related fears, I use the PCW approach with Hypnotherapy in my Leeds and Manchester clinics.
